~ My work is about the way different cultures in our society have different views and perspectives on each other. At the end of my folio I am aiming to show everyone that, it does'nt matter who you are where you come from, what you are, be proud of you are; be be proud of where you come from. That is how I came up with my concept name; Knowing Your Roots.

~ Senol Zorlu for the emotions being brought out in my photographs. Sarah Cheng-De Winne for the composition she uses and she portrays it through a feminism outlook; some examples are the way Tess Harding, Estelle Kei and Craig Westenberg are positioned. Bettina von Zwehl for the group of series that I will the start my board with and my work book research. Anne Collier for the photographs on the boxes that I have not yet taken or brainstormed. Hans Eijkelboom for the way he uses people in society to enhance the idea of individuality and having them to wear the same thing.

~ I do have enough work for panel 1 but I'm stuck on doing my series of photo for my book work.

This photograph is one De Winne's portraits from her  gallery album 'Queen Mab'.

In this image by Sarah Cheng-De Winne and he sketch that I've drawn, we see that the centre of interest draws us to the positioning of the girl. 

She's been placed on the left. So the composition of this photo image has balanced well with the depth of space that's shown. It explains the deep depth of black and grey on the rest of the photograph. This creates an effect of separation between her world, or in other words, a split between how she sees her culture/identity than what others see. 

The image has very lightly reflected if you look closely, kinda like vanishing points where space disappears into nothing but is 'just' there to see. Her face is looking from the bottom of the page to the top. This is when symmetry comes in. It's not equally symmetrical, but it's reflected/rotated as a 'different view'. The image is balanced as explained before, it kind of creates a mirror like effect, which brings in my theme of identity and two different views that differs a persons identity.

Though the dominating color is black, my eyes are always drawn back to the red on her neck and the red love heart on the lips. She has used color to outline or define the importance of feminism and how they define themselves as ladies. This use of color gives the photo a feeling of dull and cold (background) juxtaposed to the red expressions of feminism and the whole idea of putting yourself out there for people to appreciate and embrace. 

| Begi Ah Lam : Proof sheet ~ Samoan |

This is Begi Ah Lam a year 11 Samoan boy. Begi is one of my models that I'm going to use to show the idea of identity of where you come from and his perspective as a young Samoan boy in society. Begi is 15 years old and is one three kids. He is involved in many things in school and in the community. He attends church on Sundays and is heavily involved in his church band.

| Artist Model ~ Bettina von Zwehl |

Bettina von Zwehl was bron in Munich in 1971. Zwehl received MA from the Royal College of Art, London 1999. Bettina von Zwehl's work has been exhibited in many galleries in Europe and in the United States. Her famous series 'Alina' (shown below) was exhibited in photoworks and produced in collaboration with Royal College of Music, Photographer's Gallery, London in 2004 and in 'Photography' 2005 at Victoria Miro Gallery, London. Zwehl's work has been shown at Lombard - Freid Fine Arts, New York and Galleria Laura Pecci, Milan Steidl and photoworks have co-published her first monograph in 2007.

Bettina von Zwehl began making portraiture as a student at the Royal College of Art.
''As an artist I am drawn to the intensity of the resulting image and the descriptive power of the format.''
Her work is an outgoing enquiry into the possibilities of portraiture and its fine subtleties. Each of her work aims to enhance psychological states in everyday life using controlled conditions to search for some note of perfect balance in which the sense of an intimate humanity might be revealed.

These photographs show a bit of what I'm trying to go with my concept. Personally, I think that most of these photos capture the idea of identity and they've interpreted it in a way of pushing into society to try and fit in. 

I really like this photo of this girl. She has grasped the idea of loneliness and has 

separated her actual face with a duplicate on paper. I think what this photograph 

is trying to say is, that hiding yourself or your identity behind closed door is something

young people tend to do. To show who are and where you belong to is something we

should all be proud of. 

In this image we recognise a man looking outside from inside a room I suspect.

The shadows that reflect onto his face shows maybe insecurity. Being held up in a 

room wanting to just go out there. The closure through the binds shows what is 

outside compared to how feel as an individual.

This is my favourite image. This photograph by Senol Zorlu captures the concept

of identity. I've interpreted this image as an image of a poor little girl trying to reach out.

She has been identified as a little girl 'trying' to come into this world but is difficult

due to the small hole (pathway) she is trying get out from.  

| Artist Models |

The two modern artist models that I have found so far that portray my concept are Senol Zorlu and Sarah Cheng-De Winne. These two photographers mainly focus on identity and yourself is expressed in a comfortable environment.

Senol Zorlu is a Turkish photographer living and working in Germany. Zorlu focuses on portraying people, places and their cultural. Most of his photos specialize in documenting cultures and traditional life ways of Asia, Latin America and Africa.

Sarah-De Winne is a freelance photographer that specializes in portraiture, fashion conceptual photographer that represents identities photography. At the age of 20, Winne was trained in Art & Design and first picked up fashion photography as it led to making social commentary about the way women's were exposed through the Eight:For the Urbanized Woman. Sarah's self-portrait project illustrated her desire to use her own unique perspective to discover women's issues and her identity as an artist.

   

| Concept Ideas |

So its taken me a while to figure out what concept I wanted to do; and I've finally come up with  a concept that I know I will like and enjoy. My concept for 2014 is, 'Identity ~ Knowing your roots'.

What I'm trying to portray is society's perspective and opinion by facials on race and how its impacted in the twenty first century juxtaposed to the earlier centuries where racism was a big issue and was very difficult to find out who you really were & questioned if they had a purpose in life. Through my concept I am wanting to enhance the idea of unity, community and becoming as one, no matter what race you are and where you come from, to make the world and especially where you live a better place.

I have found 2  modern artist models that mainly focus on identity and yourself is expressed in a comfortable environment.
